What is the vision of Maths at Lee Chapel?
We are firm believers in “You enjoy what you are good at and you’re good at what you enjoy”. This underpins our approach to teaching maths at Lee Chapel. As a school, we want children to enjoy maths and relish the pleasure and satisfaction they experience when they are successful.
Intent
The constructs of lessons should be focused around engaging learners with teaching and tasks that deepens children’s understanding. To provide children with the skills that make them efficient problem solvers in mathematics and any other facet of life. As a part of lessons children develop skills, using concrete, pictorial and abstract representations. Units are taught in accordance with the White Rose Hub scheme of work ensuring a balanced weighting of topics, whilst teachers prioritise key areas of the curriculum. White Rose also provides stimulus and ideas for engaging activities.
Implementation
At Lee Chapel, our expectations for Maths:
- Whole school one-hour maths lesson per day from Reception to Year 6
- RM Maths used as an intervention for children identified as being below age-related in Year 1 and Year 2.
- Junior classes take part in a weekly ‘Marvellous Maths’ session which consists of children being exposed to new learning or consolidating through activities or games.
- Upper and Lower Junior Maths House competitions.
- Entry into external Maths competitions.
Impact
Children are formally assessed three times per year (once per term). Assessments used are from the White Rose Hub so that it mirrors the scheme being used. Teachers continually assess children on a day-to-day basis. Assessing whether they have met and are a secure in their understanding of a Learning Objective. Ultimately, we want children to apply the skills they have developed to solve mathematical problems in the classroom and beyond.
